How to Apply Makeup Step by Step: A Full-Face Tutorial from a Pro

By Sarah Fendrich · May 21, 2026

I've been doing makeup for over 20 years — first at Bobbi Brown, then at Christian Dior, and now with my own line. And the question I get asked more than any other isn't about a specific product. It's this: What order do you apply everything?

The order matters more than most people realize. Put your products on in the wrong sequence and even great makeup looks patchy, fades faster, or sits heavy on the skin. Get the order right and everything works together — your coverage evens out, your color pops, and it all holds until the end of the day.

Here's my exact routine, step by step. I filmed it too, so you can watch and read at the same time.

The golden rule before you start

Everything goes upward. Blush, bronzer, concealer — every product is swept upward toward the temples. This lifts the face rather than dragging it down. It's the single technique that makes the biggest difference, and once you learn it, you'll never apply anything downward again.

Step 1: Camera Ready Primer

Start with one pump of primer — that's all you need. Apply it everywhere except directly under your eyes: your cheeks, nose, forehead, chin. This is the step that controls redness and creates an even surface for everything that follows. Think of it as the foundation for your foundation.

One pump. That's it. More product doesn't mean better coverage — it means a heavier finish and shorter wear.

Step 2: Touch Up Veil Concealer (before foundation — yes, before)

Most people put concealer on last. I apply it second — before foundation — and it changes everything.

Use your middle finger to tap the concealer under your eye, corner to corner. Never rub. Tap. Then blend it upward with the same tapping motion. Rubbing pulls the product and leaves it uneven; tapping sheers it out so it disappears into the skin.

A tip I share with every client: the Touch Up Veil Concealer also works as an eraser. Made a small mistake with your liner? Tap a little concealer on your fingertip and clean up the edge. It's one of the most versatile products in the line.

Step 3: BB Cream (with a flat brush — always)

This is the step where I see the most technique mistakes, so I want to be specific.

Use a flat foundation brush. Never a sponge. Sponges absorb too much product — you end up pressing half of what you applied right into the sponge instead of onto your skin. A flat brush gives you control over how much goes on and where.

How to apply:

  1. Start at the inner cheek and work the brush upward, then sweep it back down toward the jaw
  2. Use short downward strokes along the nose, with a tapping motion right around the nostrils for precise coverage
  3. Work one side of the forehead at a time, blending downward
  4. Take whatever is left on the brush and blend it into your neck — no line at the jaw

That last step — blending into the neck — is the one most people skip. It's also the one that makes the difference between makeup that looks like makeup and makeup that looks like skin.

My BB Cream is a tinted moisturizer with real coverage. It has Vitamin B3, Cucumber, Chamomile, and Ginseng Aloe Vera — so it's doing skincare work at the same time it's evening out your complexion. Available in 8 shades from Fair to Dark.

Step 4: Dual Powder — tap, never rub

Two words: tap, never rub.

Rubbing powder into the skin looks patchy and emphasizes every pore. Tapping sets the foundation evenly, mattifies shine where you want it, and extends the wear of everything underneath. Use a fluffy brush or a sponge — tap the excess off first, then press lightly onto the skin.

I keep a Dual Powder in my purse. It's the product I reach for mid-day when I want a quick refresh without adding more product — just one or two taps on the T-zone and you're set.

Step 5: Bronzer

Start with the cream bronzer — use your middle finger and apply in a V motion, sweeping upward from the cheekbone toward the temple. Then move to the forehead: hairline across the top and just down the nose.

For the nose specifically, you have two options: apply bronzer on both sides of the nose for definition, or just down the center for warmth. Try both and see which you prefer on your face.

Step 6: Blusher — Sultry is the #1 seller for a reason

Start low on the apple of the cheek — the round, squishy part when you smile — and sweep the brush upward. Always upward. You can mix a little bronzer right into your blush brush for a seamless, sun-kissed finish that looks like it belongs there.

If you ever apply too much blush, don't panic. Take a clean brush with no product on it and blend the edges back and forth — it diffuses the color without removing it.

My Blusher in Sultry is the best-selling shade in the line. It's a light, warm pink that works on almost every skin tone and pairs beautifully with the bronzer.

Step 7: Setting Spray — the step that holds it all together

Setting spray is the last thing that goes on, after every other product is in place. Hold the bottle at arm's length — not right up to your face — and give it two or three light sprays across the whole face.

This is the step that locks in everything you've just done. Without it, your powder can shift, your blush can fade, and your foundation starts to break down by early afternoon. With it, your makeup holds through a full day of work, an event, or a summer afternoon in the Bay Area heat.

My Setting Spray has a light lavender scent — genuinely calming to spritz on. The travel size fits in your purse or your car for a quick refresh during the day.
