How to Find Your Perfect Hi-Def Foundation Shade

Hi-Def Foundation by Sarah Fendrich — shade matching guide

By Sarah Fendrich · August 2, 2026

Hi-Def Foundation is my #1 bestseller, and the question I get more than any other is the same one every time: which of the 14 shades is actually mine? It's a fair question — foundation is the hardest thing to buy online, because you can't swatch it in person before you commit.

Here's the good news: you don't have to guess. Below are the same three tests I use in private lessons to find someone's undertone in under a minute, plus something most brands don't offer at all — a free, personal shade match from me, using nothing more than a photo, a FaceTime call, or a tag on social media.

Two families, not three

Hi-Def Foundation is built on two shade families spanning seven depths each, fair to deep:

  • N — Cool Neutral — for pink, rosy, or blue-toned undertones
  • C — Warm Yellow — for golden, peachy, or olive-toned undertones

Everyone falls into one of these two families. The tests below tell you which.

Find your undertone — 3 tests

1. The Vein Test (most reliable)
Look at the inside of your wrist in natural light — not under fluorescent bulbs. Blue or purple veins mean a cool undertone (N family). Green veins mean a warm undertone (C family). Blue-green and hard to tell? You're genuinely in-between — skip to the personal match below.

2. The Jewelry Test (quick and easy)
Hold silver jewelry against your bare wrist, then try gold. If silver looks better on you, you're N. If gold looks better, you're C.

3. The Sun Test (great for ambiguous cases)
Think about how your skin reacts to sun exposure. Burn easily, rarely tan? You're likely N. Tan easily, rarely burn? You're likely C.

Get matched by Sarah — personally

Here's what 20+ years at Bobbi Brown and Christian Dior actually taught me: I can look at almost anyone — in person, on a video call, or in a well-lit photo — and tell you your exact shade, usually on the first try. It's not a party trick. It's thousands of hours of matching real faces to real formulas, and it's the reason my clients never end up with a foundation that doesn't fit.

You don't have to guess alone, and you don't have to return a $50 bottle that's the wrong shade. I offer this personally, at no cost, before you buy:

  • Send a photo — text or DM a clear, makeup-free selfie in natural daylight. I'll reply with your exact shade, usually the same day.
  • Hop on a quick FaceTime — a 2-minute video call is often all it takes.
  • Tag me on social — post or story a bare-faced selfie and tag @sarahfendrich, or comment "shade match." I check tags daily.

This is a real, personal match — not an automated quiz. Most people hear back the same day.
